Popular Telecommunication company, Airtel Nigeria has announced its plans to double its capital expenditure in 2025 to fasttrack the rollout of 5G services and expand mobile coverage in underserved rural areas.
Nigeria’s second-largest telecoms company recently made the announcement through its CEO, Dinesh Balsingh.
Speaking via a press statement, Dinesh revealed that the added spending will cover bills for a major network upgrade, which includes the deployment of fresh sites, expansion of its fibre-optic backbone, and improvement of existing infrastructure with high-capacity radios.
Revealing that Airtel is also working on leveraging the 2Africa submarine cable to enhance data capacity across its network, he said that doubling the investment will go a long way towards proving the company’s relentless commitment to Nigeria’s future.
According to him, Airtel views Nigeria as home, hence the plans to invest in transformative infrastructure that will guarantee top-quality value to its customers scattered across the country. Dinesh stressed that boosting the infrastructure will ensure that daily connectivity becomes a reality for more deprived citizens.
“Our decision to double our investment reflects our deep commitment to Nigeria’s future.
As a company that views Nigeria as home, we are investing in transformative infrastructure that will deliver unmatched value to our customers and make connectivity an everyday reality for more Nigerians,” he said.
Airtel Nigeria presently serves 57.67 million subscribers across the nation, behind MTN Nigeria, and the company has vowed to deepen customer trust after a 50 per cent tariff hike at the beginning of the year. Recall that it launched its 5G network 2 years ago, and states like Lagos, Ogun, Abuja, and Rivers were the first to bask in the euphoria of 5G bliss.
The Telecoms company makes use of 3.5GHz spectrum for quicker speeds and reduced latency, backed by the 2600MHz spectrum for increased capacity and enhanced user experience.
Airtel is also building a gigantic data centre in Lagos State under its Nxtra by Airtel brand. Located in Eko Atlantic, work on the facility began early last year, and it is set to become the country’s biggest yet once completed.
The latest network upgrade aligns with the forward-thinking agreement signed on the 26th of 2025, between Airtel Africa and MTN Group, to share infrastructure across the continent. The deal will help to reduce deployment costs, boost rural coverage, while enhancing service quality.
