General Dr. Yakubu Gowon, Former Nigerian Head of State has emphasized that the country’s renewal depends on moral transformation rooted in biblical teachings.
Gowon delivered this message as Patron during the 60th anniversary celebration of The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN), held at MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos. The Founder’s Day Annual Lecture and Awards Ceremony attracted prominent figures from Nigeria’s political, religious, and business sectors, including former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who was represented by Rtd Lt Col. Paul Edo Obi.
The former leader characterized the BSN’s mission as essential to nation-building. “The Bible Society of Nigeria has consistently reminded us that national renewal begins with moral renewal, and moral renewal begins with hearts transformed by the Word of God,” Gowon said.
He commended the organization’s six-decade evolution from its 1966 establishment into what he described as a “national and global force for spiritual transformation.” The Society’s work includes translating the Bible into indigenous languages, distributing scriptures in both print and digital formats, and conducting outreach programs in prisons, among security agencies, and within displaced communities.
Addressing contemporary challenges, Gowon stated: “In a world increasingly challenged by moral decline, conflict, misinformation, and loss of values, the relevance of the Scriptures has never been greater.” He described the Bible as offering “light in darkness, hope in despair, and truth in confusion” for Nigeria.
The former military leader appealed for nationwide support for the Society’s expansion plans, which include developing sustainable infrastructure through a Bible House project. “I therefore call on individuals, churches, corporate bodies, and friends of BSN, both within and outside Nigeria, to continue to stand with this noble mission,” Gowon said. “When we support the Bible Society, we are investing not just in an institution, but in the spiritual and moral foundation of our nation.”
The anniversary celebration featured a lecture by Pastor Poju Oyemade, Senior Pastor of The Covenant Nation, and concluded with awards recognizing individuals and institutions for exceptional service.
