Former Vice President Kamala Harris has sharply criticized the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, calling the operation both illegal and misguided.
In a statement posted on social media Sunday, Harris argued that the action was primarily motivated by control over Venezuela’s vast oil reserves rather than concerns about drugs or democracy.
“Donald Trump’s actions in Venezuela do not make America safer, stronger, or more affordable,” Harris wrote. While acknowledging Maduro as “a brutal, illegitimate dictator,” she emphasized that this reality “does not change the fact that this action was both unlawful and unwise.”
The former Democratic presidential candidate drew parallels to past military interventions, warning: “We’ve seen this movie before. Wars for regime change or oil that are sold as strength but turn into chaos, and American families pay the price.”
Harris questioned the administration’s stated motives, suggesting the operation reflects Trump’s ambition to assert regional dominance rather than genuine concern for drug enforcement or democratic values. She pointed to what she called contradictions in policy, including presidential pardons for convicted drug traffickers and alleged dealings with Maduro associates while sidelining Venezuela’s recognized opposition.
“The President is putting troops at risk, spending billions, destabilizing a region, and offering no legal authority, no exit plan, and no benefit at home,” Harris stated.
She concluded by calling for leadership focused on reducing costs for American families, upholding the rule of law, strengthening international alliances, and prioritizing American interests.
