Lagos State House of Assembly’s financial decisions under the leadership of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa have come under intense public scrutiny following revelations of massive expenditures totaling ₦90.5 billion on various projects. At the heart of these revelations is a ₦43 billion allocation for legislators’ vehicles between January 2023 and the third quarter of 2024.

According to documents obtained by People’s Gazette, the Assembly authorized ₦30.1 billion for vehicles in 2023, followed by an additional ₦13.3 billion in the first nine months of 2024. These expenditures, averaging approximately ₦1.1 billion per lawmaker, have drawn criticism amid growing economic challenges facing Lagos residents.

The Assembly’s spending patterns have attracted attention from anti-corruption groups and opposition figures. More concerning are allegations of financial irregularities, including reports of multiple bank accounts and suspicious foreign exchange transactions worth $2.4 million (₦1.1 billion) involving mutual fund investments and personal accounts.

While the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) initiated inquiries in October 2020, concrete actions remain pending. Civil society groups, including the Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CISNAC), continue to advocate for greater accountability without significant breakthrough.

The Assembly leadership has rejected these allegations. During a recent plenary session, claims of a ₦17 billion gate construction project and a ₦200 million thanksgiving service were dismissed as politically motivated fabrications aimed at influencing the upcoming 2027 elections.

A 2020 internal House panel previously cleared the leadership of wrongdoing, though anti-corruption advocates questioned the panel’s independence. Anti-corruption activist Olanrewaju Suraju has called for stronger oversight mechanisms, emphasizing the need for enhanced accountability in public office.

As Lagos State approaches the 2027 elections, these financial controversies highlight broader concerns about governance and public fund management. The situation continues to evolve as citizens and watchdog organizations demand greater transparency in public spending.
