Applesbite reports that universities lecturers have been on strike since February 14, 2022 over unresolved issues with the federal government.
Some of their demands include improved welfare for lecturers, revitalization fund for public universities, implementation of the 2009 agreement, and dropping the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) for the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).
ASUU Discloses Reason For Rejecting FG’s New Offer
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has revealed why it rejected the new offer made by the Federal Government.
In a statement on Thursday signed by its President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU said it rejected the offer because it was miserable and untenable.
Osodeke added that the major reason, which is the paucity of revenue, given by the Federal Government for the offer is not accepted by the union.
The ASUU President accused the government of allowing the ongoing strike action to linger because of its provocative indifference.
Strike: ASUU Replies Adamu Over Call For Students To Sue
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has replied to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, over his call on Nigerian students to sue the union.
Applesbite reported that the Minister of Education had urged the students to drag ASUU leadership before a court to claim damages incurred over the strike period.
He said this on Thursday at the Ministerial Briefing organized by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Adamu asserted that the union must compensate students for the closure of public institutions for six months and for the time wasted during the strike period.
The minister added that the Muhammadu Buhari-led government bears no liability to compensate millions of students grounded for six months over lost time.
Adamu, however, disclosed that the government will not pay lecturers their salaries for the six months of the closure of public institutions.
The Federal Government has advised Nigerian students to sue the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the lingering strike.
