The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has said that it would collaborate with the Nigerian embassy in Belgium to demand investigations into what led to the death of a Nigerian national, Daniel Eheri, in the custody of Luxembourg Police, Grand-Ducale.
NIDCOM recently announced that the commission will do everything possible to work with other stakeholders and ensure justice prevails.
Speaking via a press statement, the Commission’s Director of Media and Public Relations, stated that Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa condoled with the family of the deceased, as well as the Nigerian Community in Luxembourg.
She noted that NIDCOM is also partnering with the Nigerian Embassy in Belgium to guarantee a thorough investigation to establish how Daniel Eheri died.
The Nigerian Community in Luxembourg have penned a written petition to the Federal Government of Nigeria, demanding a quick investigation into the alleged extrajudicial killing of the Nigerian national.
The petition, titled “Case of an Extrajudicial Killing of a Nigerian by the Police Authority of Luxembourg” was forwarded to the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and signed by the National Coordinator of the Nigerian Community in Luxembourg, Mr Sunday Adekolu.
According to the letter, Daniel was detained by the Luxembourg police on the 10th of February 2025, along with the food items he was with at the time, but he was astonishingly confirmed dead the next day.
The petition questioned the lack of proper explanation by Luxembourg authorities regarding what actually transpired before his demise, and they must be forced to explain what happened in clear detail.
Sunday urged the Nigerian government to step in and make sure the matter is not forgotten. He believes that allowing the Belgian police to bury the matter without giving any breakdown of events will only lead to similar sad cases in the near future.
“The late Eheri Daniel was a Nigerian with an untainted record in Luxembourg and a residence permit holder.
To prevent a recurrence of such a dastardly act of inhumanity against our people here in Luxembourg, there must be transparency and justice in the handling of this case.
The ambassador’s efforts were rebuffed, as there had been no official response to his letters on the matter,” he wrote.
He further appealed to NIDCOM to take the necessary steps to clarify the facts of the case and demand an autopsy from the Luxembourg police.
“We, the Nigerian Community in Luxembourg, do hereby seek your urgent assistance on the matter, to put records in right perspectives, to persuade the Luxembourg Police Grand-Ducale into conducting autopsy on the remains of EHERI DANIEL, to sensitise the Luxembourg Police on matters that can be done to prevent a re-occurrence of such a dastardly act of inhumanity against our people here in Luxembourg in the future,” he added.
