ECOWAS endorses African Union position, emphasizing respect for national sovereignty following heightened tensions over foreign military involvement in Venezuela.
The Economic Community of West African States has voiced alarm over recent events in Venezuela, urging all involved parties to exercise restraint and uphold international legal standards.
In a statement released from Abuja on Sunday, the West African regional body recognized that nations have legitimate authority to address transnational threats including terrorism and narcotics trafficking. However, ECOWAS emphasized that such operations must conform to established international legal frameworks.
The organization reminded global actors of their duty to honor the sovereignty and territorial boundaries of all nations, as mandated by Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter.
ECOWAS indicated its complete agreement with the African Union’s stance, outlined in a 3 January 2026 statement, which called for restraint and promoted inclusive national dialogue among Venezuelans as the pathway to resolving internal challenges.
The declaration follows escalating tensions in Venezuela after reports emerged of foreign military operations, triggering widespread international responses to the changing security and political landscape in the South American nation.
Venezuela has endured years of political turmoil, economic crisis, and external pressure, creating deep divisions both within the country and internationally regarding appropriate solutions to the ongoing crisis.
ECOWAS reaffirmed its support for the Venezuelan people and urged all nations to respect Venezuela’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The organization backed efforts by Venezuelans to shape their nation’s future through an inclusive and peaceful approach.
The West African bloc now adds its voice to numerous international and regional institutions calling for de-escalation and dialogue as the situation continues to attract worldwide scrutiny.
