Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reaffirmed his position as the state’s leader while pledging to maintain peace and stability despite ongoing political challenges.
Speaking at the conclusion of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament on Saturday, Fubara emphasized that protecting lives and property remains his administration’s top priority and vowed to honor commitments made to residents.
“What is important is that I am still the governor of Rivers State, and we will continue to do what we have promised the Rivers people,” the governor stated.
Fubara praised tournament organizers for successfully conducting the week-long event without security incidents, highlighting that the peaceful proceedings demonstrate the state’s safety for residents, visitors, and investors.
“I am happy that you had your tournament for one week, and the president of the Port Harcourt Polo Club told me there was no incident. It shows that we are working and that Rivers State is safe. That is the basic responsibility of government,” he said.
However, the governor expressed disappointment that political crises have coincided with the annual polo competition for three consecutive years.
“It is really unfortunate that each time you are having your tournament, there is always one problem. In 2024, you came to me and made some promises, but that January was hell. In 2025, you didn’t bother to come to me. This 2026, which I thought would be the finest, just landed me a love letter,” Fubara remarked.
Despite persistent challenges, the governor assured that his government would stay focused on its responsibilities and continue supporting initiatives that genuinely benefit the state.
He announced plans to upgrade facilities at the Port Harcourt Polo Club, which features one of Nigeria’s premier natural grass playing fields.
Fubara encouraged attendees, including international polo players, to appreciate the city’s peaceful atmosphere and help counter negative narratives by sharing their positive experience.
