The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that two private schools in Ikeja Government Reserved Area (GRA) are safe following a thorough security inspection prompted by threatening messages alleging planted explosives.
According to police reports, the Human Resources Manager and Chief Security Officer of the affected institutions—whose names have been withheld—separately filed reports at Ikeja Divisional Headquarters around 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Both officials received identical threatening WhatsApp messages from an unidentified number claiming explosive devices had been placed on school grounds.
The alarming messages caused widespread panic, leading to the temporary closure of both schools beginning Wednesday.
Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh personally supervised the security response on Wednesday, deploying specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit, along with officers from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and other tactical divisions.
Brigadier General Ayokunle Owolabi, Commander of the Nigerian Army’s 9 Brigade, also visited the schools on Thursday to assess the situation.
Police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi confirmed in an official statement that experts conducted an exhaustive examination of all school facilities, including classrooms, administrative blocks, halls, playgrounds, and surrounding areas. “The operation yielded no explosive or hazardous device, and the schools were consequently declared safe for continued academic and administrative activities,” Adebisi stated.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered an intensive investigation to identify and arrest those responsible for the false alarm. Detectives are currently working to trace the phone number used to send the threatening messages, with prosecution planned once suspects are apprehended.
As a precautionary measure, police teams have been permanently stationed at both schools to provide continuous security for students, staff, and facilities.
