Nentawe Yilwatda, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC)https://applesbite.com/?s=apc, has announced his intention to advocate for restricting political appointments to party loyalists following the 2027 elections.
Speaking at a youth mobilization event in Abuja titled “Renewed Hope Promise Kept 2027,” organized by Works Minister of State Bello Goronyo, Yilwatda outlined his vision for strengthening party allegiance within government.
The APC leader argued that political positions should be reserved exclusively for registered party members, while technocrats could serve in advisory capacities as consultants instead.
“In 2027, as the party chairman, I will stand strong to defend the position that if you are not prepared to join us, you should not be given appointments,” Yilwatda stated. “We encourage and support the members of the political party to be in positions.”
He emphasized the importance of political appointees maintaining loyalty to the party that facilitated their positions, warning that relying on technocrats without party affiliation could jeopardize the APC’s future electoral prospects.
“If all of the appointees decided to become technocrats, the party will never return back to power,” he said. “As the party chairman, I stand with the position that they are political appointees of our party, the APC.”
Yilwatda also highlighted that the north-west geopolitical zone currently leads in registered members during the party’s ongoing electronic registration exercise.
This policy direction could have significant implications for current appointees from outside the APC, including Nyesom Wike, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member serving as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), whose reappointment in 2027 may now be in question.
