The Federal Government has greenlit the construction of a ₦1 trillion metropolitan rail network for Kano State, a transformative infrastructure project designed to revolutionize urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and drive economic growth across Nigeria’s second-largest city.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced the approval during a reception for Kano’s delegation to the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State.
According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, Governor Yusuf attributed the project’s approval to his administration’s decision to realign with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the federal level—a strategic move he said was necessary to secure critical infrastructure investments for the state.
The planned rail service will establish a modern mass transit system linking major districts throughout Kano metropolis, offering residents affordable and efficient transportation while creating new opportunities for commerce and investment.

Governor Yusuf described the initiative as a game-changing development that will enhance the quality of life for millions of residents and establish Kano as a leading transportation hub in Northern Nigeria.
He pledged that the state government would collaborate closely with federal agencies to ensure transparent implementation and maximize benefits for Kano citizens, while providing complementary policies and infrastructure support.
The governor thanked the Federal Government for the project and acknowledged Vice President Kashim Shettima and his wife, Hajiya Nana Shettima, for their support of Islamic education. The Vice President donated an electric vehicle to Hafsat Muhammad Sada, the national Qur’anic competition winner, while Mrs. Shettima contributed ₦5 million.
Governor Yusuf praised these donations as powerful incentives for young people to pursue Qur’anic studies and moral development.
In a separate gesture, Governor Yusuf rewarded Hafsat Muhammad Sada with a Hajj pilgrimage package for herself and her mother, an international scholarship, a land allocation, and a cash prize for her exceptional performance at the competition. Other Kano representatives who excelled in various recitation categories also received land grants and monetary awards.
During the Government House reception, Sheikh Shehi Shehi Mai Hula, Chairman of the Musabaqa Board of Trustees, and Alhaji Aliyu Harazimi Umar, Dan Amar of Kano and District Head of Gobirawa—representing the Emir of Kano—congratulated the governor and the people of Kano on their historic achievement. They expressed confidence in continued success at future competitions, citing strong stakeholder commitment to sustaining excellence in Qur’anic education.
