President Bola Tinubu has stepped into the prolonged political standoff in Rivers State, hosting late-night reconciliation talks in Abuja between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Sources at the Presidential Villa confirmed to Vanguard that the meeting brought together the two rival political leaders and other influential stakeholders from the state, though specific outcomes remain undisclosed.
In what appears to be a significant thaw in relations, Governor Fubara reportedly accompanied Wike to his Guzape residence following the talks. Unverified reports suggest the governor offered assurances to avoid actions that might be seen as provocative, hinting at a potential breakthrough in the months-long feud.
The conflict between Fubara and his predecessor Wike has paralyzed governance in Rivers State since shortly after the governor took office. The House of Assembly fractured into competing camps, with lawmakers aligning behind either leader. The governor faced impeachment attempts, while the state endured a cycle of court cases and legislative shutdowns.
At the heart of the dispute lies a battle for political dominance in the oil-rich state, particularly control over party machinery and policy direction.
