Former Labour Party presidential flag-bearer Peter Obi has called attention to the uncommon overlap of Lent and Ramadan falling on the same start date in Nigeria this year, framing the moment as carrying deeper meaning for the country.
In a social media post, Obi described the convergence as far more than a quirk of the calendar, calling it a potent symbol of collective sacrifice, introspection, and the potential for national rebirth. With both seasons traditionally centred on fasting, prayer, and gratitude, he coined the moment a “double fast” and challenged Nigerians to see past religious divides and embrace what they have in common.
The former Anambra governor used the occasion to direct attention to Nigeria’s persistent struggles — from widespread insecurity to deepening economic pain — urging citizens to channel the reflective spirit of the season into renewed empathy for society’s most vulnerable.
He was clear, however, that devotion alone would not move the needle. “Prayer alone is not enough; it must be paired with action,” he stated, pointing to charity, forgiveness, and self-discipline as the building blocks of genuine national healing and a more cohesive society.
