With International Women’s Day fast approaching, Wema Bank is gearing up for what promises to be one of its most impactful celebrations yet. Nigeria’s oldest indigenous bank and pioneer of Africa’s first fully digital bank, ALAT, has announced its 2026 IWD Grand Event, slated for March 4th, 2026.
Drawing from the global IWD 2026 theme “Give To Gain,” the bank has crafted its own rallying call — “When Women Gain, We Grow” — a declaration that goes beyond marking a date on the calendar. It is a deliberate statement about the ripple effect of investing in women, and a challenge to individuals, institutions, and societies to do more.
Wema Bank’s MD/CEO, Moruf Oseni, made the announcement with characteristic conviction, underscoring that gender inclusion is not a talking point for the bank but a lived commitment. “A society where women are left out is one that is crippled,” he said, pointing to the bank’s 2019 launch of SARA by Wema — its women-focused financial proposition — as evidence of a long-standing dedication to the cause. For Oseni, this year’s theme hits close to home. “As a Bank that continues to give to women, we have seen firsthand the unique potential that lies within women both personally and professionally,” he noted, adding that the event is designed to shift mindsets and spark action, not just inspire applause.
The event will bring together top-tier professionals and everyday women alike — creating a rare, cross-sector space for networking, storytelling, and opportunity. No matter where a woman finds herself on her journey, Wema Bank wants her in the room.
Several standout initiatives will take centre stage on the day. The SARA Gives to Empower Her Award will offer grants to women who have meaningfully uplifted other women. The He For She Award will shine a light on male bank employees who have gone beyond financial gestures to genuinely support women in their lives. The Wema Knight Gives initiative will see bank staff extend goodwill to women across Nigeria. And in perhaps the most enduring takeaway of the event, Wema Bank will launch the Girl Child Journal — a reflective publication drawing on the wisdom of 80 contributors from across industries, crafted specifically to guide and encourage the next generation of women.
