The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has expressed profound sorrow over the death of one of its officers and two other individuals in a fatal road accident that occurred on Monday, February 23, 2026, at Badagry Roundabout inward Seme.
The tragic incident involved a truck belonging to the Dangote Group. Preliminary reports indicate that the fully loaded SHACMAN truck experienced a brake failure while moving at high speed. The driver reportedly lost control, striking a LASTMA officer who was on duty managing traffic, as well as a pedestrian at the roundabout. The vehicle continued its course, killing another ব্যক্তি before finally coming to a halt about 200 meters from the initial crash point.
The driver fled the scene but was later apprehended by other LASTMA officials and handed over to the police.
Emergency responders, including LASTMA personnel, officers from the Badagry Police Division, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and concerned residents, swiftly arrived at the scene. The victims were transported to General Hospital, Badagry, where they were confirmed dead.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, describing the incident as devastating.
“This is a deeply painful loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this difficult time,” he said. “The fallen officer was a committed public servant who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. We honour his dedication, courage, and steadfast service to the people of Lagos.”
He also stressed the urgent need for transport operators to prioritise vehicle safety and maintenance.
“This unfortunate event underscores the grave consequences of mechanical failure,” Bakare-Oki noted. “We call on all haulage and logistics companies to carry out strict and routine maintenance checks, particularly on braking systems, to prevent avoidable tragedies.”
The truck involved in the crash has been impounded and handed over to the Badagry Police Division for a comprehensive forensic investigation.
LASTMA assured residents that it will collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure justice is served and to reinforce safety measures across Lagos road corridors.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regulatory oversight, improving emergency response systems, and expanding public awareness initiatives aimed at enhancing road safety and preventing similar incidents in the future.
