An elderly Ijesha man who captured the internet’s attention after calmly revealing he had bought his own coffin and dug his own grave has passed away — and was buried exactly as he had planned.
Baba Folorunsho, a native of Ilesha, became a viral sensation on TikTok after granting a candid interview in which he walked viewers through the meticulous preparations he had made for his own death. Far from morbid, his demeanor was matter-of-fact: he did not want to be a burden to his children, and he intended to make sure of it.
He first purchased a coffin back in 2012, but when it deteriorated over time, he quietly set money aside and bought a replacement, storing it in a room inside his home. He also took a shovel to the earth himself and dug the grave where he would eventually be laid to rest. His instructions to his family were clear and firm — he wanted to be buried the same day he died, or the following day at the very latest, and he warned that none of his children should deviate from his wishes.
In the same interview, the old man spoke reflectively about a long and difficult life. He noted with quiet wonder that many of the landlords in his neighbourhood had died years before him, yet he had outlived them all. He had spent much of his working life as a traditional healer in Ile-Ife before resettling in Ilesha in 2008, where he spent his final years.
Family sources confirmed that Baba Folorunsho died a few days ago and was buried in full accordance with the arrangements he had so carefully put in place. In the end, he got exactly the farewell he wanted.
May he rest in peace.
