The federal government has announced that consignments of Lenacapavir, a groundbreaking HIV prevention drug, are expected to arrive in Nigeria in March 2026.
In a statement on Monday, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) confirmed that preparations are underway for the introduction and rollout of Lenacapavir (LEN) as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) option. The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s goal to accelerate progress toward controlling the HIV epidemic.
Lenacapavir is a long-acting injectable PrEP, administered just twice a year, and clinical trials have shown it provides near-total protection against HIV infection.
“The Government of Nigeria is advancing preparations for the introduction and rollout of Lenacapavir as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. This effort demonstrates our commitment to strengthen HIV prevention and move closer to epidemic control,” the statement said.
NACA added that the rollout will be phased, beginning in priority states, supported by trained personnel, community engagement strategies, and regulatory approvals. NAFDAC has already granted approval for Lenacapavir.
Readiness assessments have been completed in 10 states — Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, FCT, Gombe, Kano, Kwara, and Lagos — to evaluate service capacity and guide implementation.
The agency also reported that a national training of trainers has taken place in Abuja, followed by state-level training for healthcare workers. Additionally, information and awareness campaigns, including educational materials, are being prepared to ensure a smooth and informed rollout of the drug.
