Former Ogun State governor and senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, has stated that his political structure played a decisive role in the emergence of Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Speaking in Sagamu during reflections on his 70th birthday and political career, Daniel said Abiodun’s path to the governorship might not have been successful without the backing of his team.
“Without people like us and the grace of God, he probably wouldn’t have been governor,” he said.
Daniel explained that internal developments within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the time influenced his decision to support Abiodun’s ambition.
The relationship between both politicians has, however, deteriorated since the start of Abiodun’s second term. The governor had earlier expressed disappointment that some beneficiaries of his support during National Assembly elections failed to back his re-election bid in 2023.
Abiodun narrowly defeated PDP candidate Ladi Adebutu by 13,915 votes in the poll. Despite the tensions, Daniel maintained that he and his allies still contributed to the governor’s re-election.
He also raised concerns about what he described as insufficient recognition for the efforts of political allies, urging leaders to prioritise the collective interest of the public over personal considerations.
“As leaders, we must be responsive and responsible to the expectations of the people,” he said.
Looking ahead to the next political cycle in Ogun State, Daniel called for mature and selfless leadership capable of sustaining development across the state.
“We need a leader who understands that beyond ego, the collective interest of the state must come first,” he added.
On his departure from the PDP, Daniel said his decision was based on ideological convictions rather than opportunism, noting his long-standing alignment with progressive politics, including his earlier association with the AD-Afenifere movement.
Reflecting on his time in office, he described Ogun as a “giant asleep” when he assumed leadership, adding that his administration focused on infrastructure, agriculture, education, and sports to drive development.
Daniel also acknowledged the influence of Obafemi Awolowo on his governance philosophy, particularly in the area of agricultural development.
He highlighted his longstanding political relationships across party lines, including ties with President Bola Tinubu and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
On national issues, Daniel backed the removal of fuel subsidy, describing it as an inevitable economic decision, and reiterated his support for the establishment of state police to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
Reflecting on his life at 70, he expressed gratitude to God despite personal and political challenges, noting that the milestone offered a moment for deep reflection.
