A dramatic twist unfolded in Ilorin, Kwara State, as All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Prince Haliru Dantsoho Mahmud, announced his candidacy only to withdraw shortly afterward in support of Ambassador Yahaya Seriki Gambari.
Mahmud, who hails from Kwara North Senatorial District, said his initial decision to run was driven by the long-standing absence of a governor from the zone. However, following consultations with key political stakeholders, he opted to step aside and endorse Seriki, describing him as a more suitable candidate to unify the state and promote inclusive development.
He explained that his decision was not a sign of defeat but a strategic move aimed at strengthening party cohesion and advancing Kwara’s collective interests.
“For decades, Kwara North has remained loyal without producing a governor. While I championed this cause for fairness, I have chosen to support a candidate I believe can best move the state forward,” he said.
Mahmud, also known as Dan’iyan Kaiama, highlighted Seriki’s reputation for grassroots engagement, youth empowerment, and community development, noting that his vision aligns with the broader agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
Addressing party supporters at an event in Ilorin, he described his withdrawal as a sacrifice made in the interest of unity and progress within the APC.
He also commended both federal and state authorities, alongside security agencies, for their response to the recent Woro incident, urging continued efforts to secure the release of those abducted.
The development is seen as a notable shift in Kwara’s early 2027 governorship race, reflecting internal efforts within the APC to foster unity, manage regional expectations, and position strong contenders ahead of the elections.
