President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed top economic officials to urgently design strategies aimed at reducing the economic pressure on Nigerians caused by the ongoing Middle East tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The directive was issued on Friday during a civic reception in Yenagoa, held after the inauguration of key infrastructure projects completed under the administration of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri.
Tinubu instructed the Ministries of Finance and Budget and Economic Planning, along with the Head of the Civil Service, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, to come up with practical solutions to cushion the economic strain—particularly the surge in fuel prices driven by global instability.
While acknowledging the hardship currently faced by citizens, the President reassured Nigerians that the government is taking steps to ease the burden. He noted that despite the challenges, Nigeria’s situation remains relatively stable compared to some other African countries.
“This administration is committed to the welfare of Nigerians. We will work with relevant institutions to review the situation and implement measures that will bring relief,” Tinubu stated.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to delivering tangible benefits, including infrastructure development, job creation, and improved economic opportunities.
Tinubu also stressed the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments in driving sustainable development, praising Governor Diri for aligning with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Among the projects commissioned were a 60-megawatt gas-fired Independent Power Plant in Elebele, the 630-metre Angiama–Oporoma Bridge, and the New Yenagoa City Road.
In his remarks, Governor Diri attributed the successful delivery of the power project to supportive federal policies, describing it as a significant step toward stable electricity supply in the state. He added that the projects would enhance economic activities, improve connectivity, and uplift residents’ living standards.
The President also paid tribute to fallen military personnel and observed a minute of silence in honour of former Bayelsa governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.
Notable figures at the event included Governors Hope Uzodimma, Dapo Abiodun, Umo Eno, and Sheriff Oborevwori, alongside former Delta State governor James Ibori and media entrepreneur Ben Murray-Bruce.
The administration reiterated its resolve to deepen partnerships with state governments to accelerate infrastructure growth, job creation, and nationwide economic development.
