A former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Umar Sani, has alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu exerts significant influence over political affairs in Lagos State.
Speaking during an interview on SYMFONI TV, Sani referenced past political developments in the state to support his position. He cited the case of former governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who was unable to secure a second term despite what many considered a commendable performance in office.
According to Sani, Ambode’s political setback was largely due to his failure to meet Tinubu’s expectations, highlighting what he described as the strong role of political influence in leadership decisions within Lagos.
He also raised concerns about Tinubu’s democratic credentials, arguing that true democrats should maintain cordial relationships with rivals even after electoral contests.
Sani further pointed to Tinubu’s reportedly strained relationships with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi following their participation in the 2023 presidential primaries.
He concluded that these instances reflect how loyalty and political rivalry operate within Tinubu’s circle, particularly in Lagos politics, where leadership decisions are closely tied to his influence.
Sani said: “Ambode, everybody agrees, was a good governor, but he didn’t meet the threshold of Tinubu, and he was removed. A person you call a democrat is somebody that will contest against certain people and still be very friendly with them.”
