The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has taken a swipe at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar after a photo circulating online appeared to show him sleeping during an opposition stakeholders’ summit in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The gathering, which held on Saturday, brought together key opposition figures who are reportedly working toward forming a united political front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among those present were former Senate President David Mark, former Minister of Information Professor Jerry Gana, activist Aisha Yesufu, Professor Pat Utomi, and former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung. Others in attendance included former governors Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Abdulfatai Ahmed (Kwara), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), and Babangida Aliyu (Niger), among several others.
Following the event, Basiru posted the image on his X (formerly Twitter) account, using it to mock the opposition figure. He captioned it: “And the opposition leader slept at the all-important opposition summit.”
He further referenced the photo in a follow-up remark, using it to dismiss claims on social media that the ruling APC was unsettled by efforts among opposition politicians to unite ahead of the next election cycle.
The Ibadan summit is part of ongoing consultations among opposition leaders aimed at building consensus and strengthening their chances of challenging the ruling party in 2027.
