The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers implicated in the extrajudicial killing of a handcuffed man in Delta State.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Force spokesperson Anthony Okon confirmed that disciplinary measures have been concluded following investigations into the incident.
The case gained public attention after a viral video showed a police officer, Nuhu Usman, alongside other officers, shooting the restrained victim at close range. The officers were initially arrested and later transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for further action.
Authorities in Delta State subsequently identified the victim as Mene Ogidi, a 28-year-old man.
According to the statement, the Force Disciplinary Committee found that Mr Usman and others involved acted in clear violation of Force Order 237 and established rules governing the use of firearms. The committee described their conduct as unlawful, unprofessional, and a breach of their duty to protect lives.
It recommended the immediate dismissal of all officers found culpable. The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for final ratification.
Beyond dismissal, the police said the officers would face prosecution. Once administrative procedures are completed, they will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities.
The IGP reiterated the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial killings and abuse of power, stressing that no officer has the right to take a life outside the law.
He also extended condolences to the victim’s family, assuring them that justice would be pursued to its conclusion.
The police urged the public to remain calm, reaffirming their commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
