US-based Nigerian dancer and singer Korra Obidi has shared her views on living conditions in Nigeria, saying many citizens have stopped relying on government support and now take responsibility for their basic needs.

Speaking on a recent episode of the One 54 podcast, she reflected on her observations about the country and how people adapt to everyday challenges.

According to her, Nigeria remains a country with strong potential, driven by a large youthful population and rapid growth in sectors like technology. However, she argued that poor leadership has limited the pace of development.

She noted that in many communities, citizens have learned to provide essential services for themselves due to unreliable public infrastructure. This includes sourcing water through private wells and purifying it for use, as well as generating electricity through personal means such as solar systems or fuel-powered generators.

Korra added that in many parts of the country, individuals and families have effectively created their own systems just to cope with daily living, saying public services are often inconsistent.

She also highlighted the resilience of cities like Lagos, describing it as fast-growing despite environmental concerns and ongoing land development projects.

“Nigeria is blessed. It has no natural disasters… Lagos is growing at an astronomical rate,” she said.

She further claimed that Nigeria’s large youth population and expanding tech space represent major opportunities, but insisted that governance challenges continue to slow progress.

“It is the government that is hindering a lot. Most people no longer care about the government,” she added.

Korra concluded that many Nigerians now operate like independent units, providing their own water, electricity, and basic services as they try to navigate daily survival.
