Two people have been killed and four others injured following a late-night shooting outside a tavern in Langlaagte, west of Johannesburg, South Africa.
The attack happened around 3 a.m. on Sunday when three armed men reportedly opened fire on a group of people gathered outside the tavern.
According to Gauteng provincial police spokesperson, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, more than 40 people were socialising and drinking outside the premises when the suspects suddenly arrived and began shooting indiscriminately.
Two men died on the spot after sustaining gunshot wounds, while four others were rushed to hospital for medical treatment. The attackers reportedly fled the scene immediately after carrying out the assault.
Police said the identities of the suspects remain unknown, while the motive behind the attack is still under investigation.
“The suspects are unknown at this stage, and the motive for the attack is yet to be determined,” Sibeko stated.
Authorities have launched investigations into two counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder.
Police also appealed to members of the public with useful information to contact the Crime Stop Line or submit tips through the MySAPS mobile application.
South Africa continues to battle high levels of violent crime and gun-related attacks, with taverns frequently becoming targets of mass shootings in different parts of the country.
The latest incident has heightened concerns over rising gun violence across the country.
In another recent shooting incident in the Elsies River area, five people were shot in two separate attacks earlier in the week. Among the victims was a 39-year-old woman who died after being caught in crossfire during a gun battle involving occupants of two vehicles.
