The newly sworn-in Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has assured Nigerians that the country will soon begin to experience noticeable improvements in electricity supply, even though a full turnaround will take time.
Tegbe gave the assurance on Monday shortly after his inauguration by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the administration is actively working across the electricity value chain to resolve long-standing challenges in the sector.
He cautioned against expectations of immediate perfection, stressing that there is no quick fix to the country’s power problems.
According to him, “there is no magic wand” that can deliver 24-hour electricity overnight, but Nigerians will begin to see steady and visible progress.
He added that the government has committed significant attention and investment to the sector, with ongoing reforms expected to gradually improve power generation, transmission, and distribution.
Tegbe said early signals of improvement were already being recorded in parts of the country, which he attributed to renewed coordination within key agencies under the Ministry of Power.
He revealed that within the last four weeks, he had engaged major stakeholders including the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), and other sector institutions to assess challenges and align solutions.
According to him, these engagements have produced fresh commitments from operators, some of which are already reflecting in system performance improvements.
He cited instances such as the quick restoration of a failed feeder at Katampe by TCN engineers within 24 hours, as well as the resumption of operations by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company after a long period of inactivity, as signs of renewed activity in the sector.
While acknowledging that the challenges remain significant, the minister appealed for public patience and support for the administration, insisting that reforms are ongoing across generation, transmission, and distribution segments.
Tegbe also called on Nigerians to support the Tinubu administration and continue to offer cooperation as efforts intensify to stabilize electricity supply nationwide.
He expressed optimism that sustained reforms would eventually deliver a more reliable power system, adding that “very soon, Nigeria will be better lit.”
