Residents of Apunren-Ijebu in Ogun State have commended former governor and senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, for his role in addressing the long-standing military land dispute affecting their communities, describing him as a “voice for the voiceless” and a source of renewed hope.
In a letter of appreciation signed by the Alapunren of Apunren-Ijebu, Oba Jimson Owode Oyelaja, on behalf of the community and neighbouring settlements, residents said Daniel’s intervention brought attention to a crisis that had persisted for decades around land linked to the Sappers Barracks area in Ijebu-Ode.
The communities said they had lived under the threat of eviction and demolition for years due to the dispute with the Nigerian Army, a situation that worsened earlier in the year when demolition notices were reportedly issued to several settlements over alleged encroachment.
According to the letter titled “Appreciation, Encouragement and Appeal for Continued Support on the Military De-Acquisition,” Daniel was the first major political figure to take concrete steps toward addressing their plight. Residents credited him with helping to elevate the matter at the Senate level, particularly through the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions.
They also noted that his efforts helped facilitate dialogue between community representatives and military authorities, including senior officers representing the Chief of Army Staff, which they said reduced tensions and slowed further demolition actions.
The community described the intervention as a turning point, saying it restored confidence among residents who had previously feared mass displacement, loss of property, and disruption to livelihoods and education.
“Your actions restored confidence where despair had begun to set in,” the letter stated, adding that Daniel’s engagement demonstrated responsive and compassionate leadership.
While expressing gratitude, the residents urged the senator to sustain his advocacy until the de-acquisition process is fully resolved, calling for a lasting settlement that would guarantee peace, stability, and certainty for affected families.
They also praised his grassroots approach and commended his continued commitment despite his national responsibilities, describing him as a leader who remained closely connected to community struggles.
The letter further appealed for the swift conclusion of negotiations with relevant authorities, expressing hope that a final resolution would be achieved soon to bring lasting relief to the affected communities.
The Apunren-Ijebu community reaffirmed its support for Daniel, saying his intervention had restored faith in public leadership and left a lasting impact on residents across the affected areas.
