The Federal Government has directed all civil servants to stop using personal email accounts for official duties, mandating a full shift to approved government communication platforms.
The announcement was made in Abuja by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, during a digital transformation summit marking the 20th anniversary of Galaxy Backbone.
According to Walson-Jack, the government has already activated over 115,000 official GovMail accounts to strengthen secure, traceable, and professional communication across the federal civil service.
She stressed that official government correspondence must no longer be conducted through personal email services or informal channels, noting that such practices weaken record-keeping and accountability.
She added that all official information must remain within government-controlled systems, even when an officer leaves a position, to ensure continuity and prevent loss of critical records.
Walson-Jack also disclosed that the Federal Government has completed the digitalisation of work processes across all 38 federal ministries and extra-ministerial departments, achieving the milestone before the end of December 2025.
She described the development as evidence that public sector reforms can succeed when driven by consistent leadership and institutional commitment, adding that the civil service is increasingly adapting to modern digital operations.
Recalling past inefficiencies, she noted that government files were often delayed, misplaced, or caught in lengthy approval chains. She said the new digital systems now allow for better tracking of documents, improved transparency, and stronger accountability.
According to her, the broader paperless civil service initiative is designed to reduce bureaucracy, speed up administrative processes, and make government records easier to retrieve and manage.
