The ancient Ipokia Kingdom in Ogun State has been thrown into mourning following the death of its traditional ruler, the Onipokia of Ipokia, Oba Yisa Sola Adeniyi Olaniyan (Orijajoogun I).
The first-class monarch reportedly passed away in the United States on Saturday after a brief illness. While the palace is yet to issue a comprehensive official statement, sources close to the royal family and associates confirmed his passing.
Oba Olaniyan ascended the throne as the 46th Onipokia of the ancient Ipokia Kingdom in August 2020. During his reign, he earned recognition for promoting cultural preservation, community development, and strengthening ties between the kingdom and Nigerians living abroad.
Before becoming king, Oba Olaniyan built a distinguished career in the United States. He studied Criminal Justice at the University of Houston-Downtown and worked across the aviation, oil and gas, renewable energy, and community development sectors.
Widely regarded as a progressive monarch, he combined his international experience with the traditions of his homeland, championing education, youth empowerment, investment in Ipokia, and initiatives aimed at fostering economic growth within the border community. He was also praised for promoting peace and unity across Yewaland.
Beyond his traditional responsibilities, Oba Olaniyan founded the Afro-Heritage Broadcasting & Entertainment Awards (AHBEA), a platform established to celebrate African entertainment figures and cultural icons worldwide. He was remembered by friends and associates as a visionary, approachable, and generous leader who remained committed to preserving Yoruba cultural heritage while embracing innovation.
In recognition of his contributions to cultural preservation and community development, the late monarch was inducted into the Nigerian Books of Record Hall of Fame in 2025, with the institution commending his ability to blend traditional leadership with modern development.
His death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from fellow traditional rulers, political leaders, community organisations, and indigenes of Ipokia both within Nigeria and abroad, many describing him as a monarch whose impact extended beyond the palace to the overall development of his people.
The Ipokia Palace is expected to announce funeral arrangements and traditional burial rites in accordance with the customs of the ancient kingdom in the coming days.
