The Lagos State Government has postponed the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) papers initially scheduled for Wednesday, July 1, 2026, due to the observance of the Oro festival in parts of the state.
The decision was announced to ensure the safety of students, teachers, examination officials, and other stakeholders who could be affected by movement restrictions associated with the traditional festival.
According to the state authorities, all affected BECE papers will now be written on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. Candidates have been advised to take note of the new examination date and continue preparing accordingly.
The government assured parents, school administrators, and students that the rescheduling would not disrupt the overall examination timetable, as necessary adjustments have been made to accommodate the change.
Education officials urged all public and private schools participating in the BECE to communicate the revised schedule to candidates and ensure they report to their examination centres on the new date.
The Lagos State Government also appealed for the understanding and cooperation of parents, guardians, and school authorities, stressing that the decision was taken in the interest of public safety while respecting the cultural significance of the Oro festival in the affected communities.
Students and parents have been encouraged to monitor official announcements from the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the Lagos State Examinations Board for any further updates regarding the examination timetable.
