The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted former Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, bail in the sum of ₦100 million as he faces corruption charges filed by the Federal Government.
The ruling was delivered on Wednesday during proceedings in the case against the former CCT chairman.
Umar had earlier been remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre after Justice Peter Kekemeke ordered his detention following his arraignment on a four-count charge bordering on alleged corruption.
According to the Federal Government, investigations revealed that Umar allegedly abused his office by obtaining financial benefits for himself while serving as head of the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
The prosecution alleged that in 2021, Umar received ₦5.5 million through his wife’s bank account from a contractor engaged to repaint the CCT headquarters in Abuja.
The government further claimed that on January 25, 2024, he again used the same account to receive ₦6 million from another contractor responsible for digitising the tribunal’s records.
In addition, Umar was accused of instructing a contractor to pay ₦2.43 million directly to Baze University in Abuja as tuition fees for his daughter.
The alleged offences are said to contravene Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.
However, Umar denied all the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charges. His trial is expected to continue on a date to be determined by the court.
