Lagos State has established Nigeria’s first Alternative Secondary School for Girls, an initiative designed to give girls who dropped out of school an opportunity to resume their education and acquire vocational skills.
The school, located on Old Ojo Road, Agboju, Amuwo, Lagos, was commissioned on Friday by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who was represented at the ceremony by the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima.
The development was announced by the Public Affairs Officer of the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Elias Oladipo.
Speaking at the commissioning, the First Lady described the project as a significant step towards making education more inclusive and ensuring that girls who have been unable to continue their schooling are not left behind.
She said the establishment of the school represented an important milestone in efforts to provide education that responds to the different circumstances and needs of learners.
The alternative school is targeted at girls whose education has been interrupted by challenges including early marriage, poverty, teenage pregnancy, displacement and other social or personal circumstances.
According to the ministry, the institution will provide accelerated learning programmes to enable beneficiaries to continue their secondary education while also receiving vocational training and psychosocial support.
The programme is expected to equip the girls with academic knowledge, practical skills and other opportunities that could improve their prospects for further education and economic independence.
The initiative places Lagos at the forefront of efforts to address barriers that prevent vulnerable girls from completing their education.
The establishment of the school also underscores the growing emphasis on alternative pathways to education for young people whose schooling has been disrupted by circumstances beyond their control.
The Lagos State Government is expected to use the programme to provide affected girls with a supportive learning environment while helping them rebuild their educational and economic prospects.
