President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday met with the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, and the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Darma, at the State House in Abuja.
The closed-door meeting centred on the management and disposal of properties seized nationwide by the anti-graft agency, with emphasis on transparency and accountability in the process.
A statement from the State House media office issued Tuesday night confirmed the details of the engagement.
It read in part that the EFCC chairman and the housing minister met with the president “on the management and disposal of seized houses nationwide, under the rules of transparency and Accountability at the State House, Abuja.”
Meeting Comes Days After Tinubu’s Osun Intervention
The Abuja meeting follows closely on the heels of Tinubu’s recent appeal to the EFCC to lift the freeze it placed on Osun State Government accounts.
The commission had obtained the freezing order on August 5, days before the state’s governorship election, citing an investigation into alleged mismanagement of ecology funds, intervention funds, and allocations the state received from the Federation Account Allocation Committee. The funds under scrutiny were put at approximately ₦11 billion.
Osun State had responded by dragging the EFCC to the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to have the order nullified and demanding ₦2 billion in exemplary damages. The state government also accused the commission of running an unsubstantiated “witch-hunt” against it since March.
But following his declaration as winner of the governorship poll, Governor Ademola Adeleke announced he had directed the state’s Attorney General to withdraw the suit against the EFCC.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Adeleke credited President Tinubu’s intervention for defusing the standoff.
“I’m putting them behind. What else do I want? I have instructed my Attorney General to drop it. Mr President has done well. He called me. What more do I want?” the governor said.
