The Federal Government’s ₦12 billion intervention fund provided to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to settle players’ wages and bonuses is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The development followed the NFF’s refusal to release documents relating to the management and spending of the funds, explaining that the records had been submitted to the two anti-corruption agencies as part of their investigations.
The federation disclosed this in a letter dated August 18, 2026, signed by Onoja Joshua, Esq., on behalf of the NFF General Secretary.
The letter was issued in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request submitted by Cromwell & Okeke, which sought access to financial statements, utilisation records and other documents concerning the ₦12 billion intervention fund reportedly released by the Federal Government to pay players’ wages and bonuses.
The law firm submitted its request on August 7, 2026, and the NFF received it on August 11.
In its response, the football federation said it could not provide the requested documents because the matter was already being investigated by the EFCC and ICPC.
The letter, referenced NFF/LEG/10/1/879 and titled, “Re: Application for disclosure of financial records and utilisation logs regarding the N12 billion Federal Government Intervention Fund released for players’ wages and bonuses,” stated that the relevant records were currently with the anti-corruption agencies.
The NFF explained that the documents requested were directly connected to the ongoing investigations.
The federation further stated that it was no longer in possession of the documents, noting that all records relating to the fund had been transferred to the EFCC and ICPC.
The development means the handling and utilisation of the ₦12 billion fund are now subject to scrutiny by the two federal anti-corruption agencies.
The NFF’s response also indicates that access to the financial records may depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigations by the EFCC and ICPC.
