Former Minister of Transportation and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has alleged that the economic hardship linked to President Bola Tinubu’s policies contributed to the death of his mother.

Amaechi made the allegation during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, where he discussed the impact of the Tinubu administration’s economic policies on Nigerians.

The former minister said his mother was in good health before Tinubu assumed office but that it later became increasingly difficult for the family to afford the medication she required.

According to him, despite efforts to provide adequate care for his mother, the rising cost of drugs made the situation more difficult.

Amaechi said, “The policies Tinubu introduced are killing people. I lost my mother because of the policies. We have lost people. President Tinubu’s policies killed my mother.

“Before Tinubu became President, my mother was healthy. Suddenly, when Tinubu came, it became difficult to buy drugs for my mother. I did the best I could in taking care of my mother.”

He also criticised the removal of the petrol subsidy, arguing that the policy was expected to improve the living conditions of Nigerians but had instead increased the financial pressure on households.

Amaechi’s comments come amid continued political debate over the impact of the Federal Government’s economic reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and other measures introduced since Tinubu assumed office.

Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, had earlier criticised Amaechi’s political position and suggested that the opposition coalition’s plan to defeat Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election would not succeed.

Amaechi had also previously questioned the electability of ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar in a Trust TV interview conducted before he became Atiku’s running mate.

At the time, he argued that although Atiku had repeatedly won presidential primaries, his victories at the party level had not translated into success in the general elections.

Amaechi said winning a party primary was different from securing victory in a general election and expressed hope that Atiku would eventually fail to win a primary for the first time.

Reacting to the resurfaced interview on X, Onanuga said Amaechi was aware of the political challenges facing the ticket.
