Gunmen have killed an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and abducted a businessman in Pushit community, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident reportedly occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, despite a dusk-to-dawn curfew recently imposed in parts of the area following repeated security attacks.
A community member, Lawrence Tabitha, disclosed that the deceased officer, a Deputy Superintendent of the NSCDC, was shot near his residence while riding his motorcycle.
According to Tabitha, the gunmen had earlier kidnapped a businessman who deals in fuel, cement and fertiliser.
He explained that the attackers opened fire on the NSCDC officer after the headlight of his motorcycle exposed their movement as they attempted to escape with the abducted businessman.
The incident has raised fresh concerns among residents over the worsening security situation in Pushit and neighbouring communities, despite measures introduced to prevent further attacks.
Tabitha called on security agencies and the Plateau State Government to urgently strengthen security operations in Pushit District and ensure the safe release of the kidnapped businessman.
He expressed concern over the repeated attacks in the district, particularly in communities such as Vodni, Sabon Gari and Nchiya.
The community member also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies to help prevent further incidents.
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to reach security operatives for official confirmation of the incident were unsuccessful.
