Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured residents that the Opebi-Mende-Ojota Link Bridge will be opened to the public before Christmas, despite delays in the construction work.
The governor disclosed this during an inspection of the project on Monday, October 26, 2026, stating that construction had reached approximately 80 per cent completion.
Sanwo-Olu acknowledged that the project had missed its previously announced September completion deadline. He explained that his visit was aimed at identifying the reasons for the delay and assessing the progress of work.
However, he stressed that the government would not compromise the quality of the engineering work, the bridge’s unique design or public safety in an attempt to meet the deadline.
According to the governor, the bridge features a distinctive steel structure inspired by the area’s historical association with cane weaving. The design is intended to preserve the cultural identity of the community while introducing modern infrastructure.
He explained that the project involves installing more than 300 tonnes of steel at heights of up to 25 metres, making it a technically demanding construction project.
Sanwo-Olu disclosed that three of the four major steel components, designed to resemble interwoven cane, had been completed, while work was ongoing on the remaining section.
He added that light-emitting diode (LED) lighting featuring the colours of Lagos State would be installed to give the bridge a distinctive appearance and make it a notable landmark.
The governor further explained that additional work, including site cleaning, repainting of kerbs, restoration of areas affected by construction and landscaping, would be carried out before the bridge is opened to motorists and other road users.
He said the state government was determined to deliver a project that would serve its transportation purpose while also improving the surrounding environment.
Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism that the area could become a destination for recreation, cultural heritage and tourism, allowing residents and visitors to appreciate the history and identity of the community.
He described the bridge as an important infrastructure project that combines modern engineering with cultural preservation.
The governor commissioned the construction of the bridge in 2022 as part of efforts to reduce traffic congestion around Ikeja and neighbouring communities.
The project is designed to provide an alternative route and ease the persistent gridlock along the Opebi, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Mende and Ojota corridor.
Although the project has experienced delays, the governor’s latest assurance indicates that the state government is targeting an opening before Christmas, subject to the completion of the remaining construction and finishing work.
