Wunmi Mosaku A British-Nigerian Actress has received her first Academy Award nomination for her performance in Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller Sinners, achieving a significant breakthrough in her distinguished career.
The actress earned recognition in the Best Supporting Actress category, competing against Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for Sentimental Value, Amy Madigan for Weapons, and Teyana Taylor for One Battle After Another.
In the music categories, Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood secured another Oscar nomination for scoring One Battle After Another, adding to his previous nods for Phantom Thread and The Power of the Dog.
Irish actor Paul Mescal, considered a likely contender for his performance in Hamnet, was surprisingly excluded from the supporting actor nominations. The category instead features Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn for One Battle After Another, Jacob Elordi for Frankenstein, Stellan Skarsgard for Sentimental Value, and Delroy Lindo for Sinners.
However, Mescal’s Hamnet co-star Jessie Buckley remains the favorite for Best Actress following her Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice wins for playing Agnes Hathaway, Shakespeare’s wife.
Director Chloe Zhao is anticipated to receive another Best Director nomination this year. She made history in 2021 as the second woman—and first woman of color—to claim the Oscar for directing with Nomadland.
Hamnet appears poised for a Best Picture nomination, though it faces formidable competition from One Battle After Another, Paul Thomas Anderson’s drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a former revolutionary attempting to save his teenage daughter.
DiCaprio is expected to compete for Best Actor alongside Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, where he portrays an aspiring ping pong champion, and Wagner Moura for the Brazilian thriller The Secret Agent.
The 97th Academy Awards will be held in Hollywood on March 15, with comedian Conan O’Brien serving as host. Actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman announced this year’s nominees.
