The resignation of former Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has sparked a fresh scramble for the vacant position, with Jibril Isma’il Falgore and Murtala Sule Garo emerging as the leading contenders.
Other potential candidates include Kabiru Ado Lakwaya, former Commissioner for Youths under ex-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu Yushau, Kano State Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON); and former governorship aspirant Salihu Sagir Takai.
The political shuffle comes amid internal realignments within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s entry into the party. While party leaders aim to unite ahead of the 2027 governorship election against former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s candidate, competing interests remain a challenge.
Governor Yusuf is reportedly weighing the preferences of key party figures, including former APC National Chairman Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, alongside his own choice. Allegations of undue pressure to influence the selection have surfaced, with a group of concerned citizens writing to President Bola Tinubu warning against the imposition of a candidate facing corruption allegations.
Gwarzo’s resignation came amid impeachment threats over alleged misconduct during his tenure as commissioner. The Assembly dropped proceedings following his departure, but the exit has left a political vacuum and opened opportunities for realigned alliances.
Among the frontrunners, Garo, a former Commissioner for Local Government and 2023 deputy governorship candidate, enjoys strong grassroots support. However, his candidacy is shadowed by ongoing corruption allegations linked to local government funds.
Falgore, Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, is endorsed by pro-government groups and benefits from zoning considerations, as Kano South has not produced a deputy governor since 1999. His supporters argue his appointment would enhance executive-legislative cooperation.
Other potential candidates bring distinct strengths: Lakwaya is known for youth engagement and party mobilisation in Kano North; Sa’adatu Yushau Salisu is a respected grassroots organiser and could become the state’s first female deputy governor; and Takai, a seasoned politician, may serve as a compromise candidate despite past electoral defeats.
Political analysts note that Governor Yusuf faces a delicate balancing act involving regional representation, party interests, and governance considerations as he prepares to fill the critical post ahead of the 2027 elections.
