Samuel Okoli, a secondary school student preparing for his senior exams in 2023, participated in virtual extramural classes during the third-term holiday. Throughout the program, Samuel never met his teachers physically. Instead, he interacted with them through smartboards and online platforms, using virtual textbooks and submitting his assignments electronically. His mother, Dorothy Okoli, described the experience as “smart, less stressful, and eliminating face-to-face contact, which often breeds unhealthy relationships.”

In 2024, Samuel sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), earning distinctions in four subjects and a ‘B’ grade in three. His success story reflects a growing trend where technology is increasingly being integrated into Nigeria’s education system, with smartboards and digital learning tools transforming how students learn.

Similarly, Aloysius Nkume’s son, who faced speech development challenges, greatly benefited from using a smart device loaded with educational programs. Nkume explained that this approach allowed his son to learn at his own pace, which significantly improved his development. Technology, from smart devices to smartboards, is not just enhancing regular classrooms but also making specialized education more accessible.

The Tech Revolution in Nigeria’s Education

Nigeria’s education landscape is undergoing a digital transformation, where traditional teaching tools like blackboards are being replaced by smartboards, e-books, and virtual learning environments. Schools are moving away from physical textbooks and printed materials, adopting cost-effective solutions like e-books that reduce the burden on parents facing rising paper prices.

Hassan Bala, managing director at Learn Africa, emphasized this shift: “Technology is cost-effective. The dynamism in Nigeria’s education space has improved reading and learning for students at a lower cost.” Smartboards and digital tools are becoming essential in classrooms, allowing students to engage with content more interactively and cost-efficiently.

Benefits of Technology in Education

The incorporation of smartboards and other digital technologies into classrooms has made education more accessible, flexible, and personalized. According to Nubi Achebo, director of academic planning at the Nigerian University of Technology & Management, digitisation has been a game-changer in Nigeria’s education sector. “Students and teachers no longer need to be physically present to learn,” Achebo noted, pointing to the flexibility that smartboards and online resources provide.

Teachers like Chris Nmeribe are adapting to this technological shift, noting that students are still actively reading but doing so differently. “Children are still reading, but they are doing it through smartphones, videos, and diagrams rather than traditional textbooks,” Nmeribe said. Smartboards, in particular, allow for a more interactive and engaging learning experience, helping students visualize concepts better than static blackboards ever could.

Rising Internet Penetration

Internet access is playing a crucial role in this tech revolution. By 2024, Nigeria had 103 million internet users, with smartphone penetration expected to reach 60 percent by 2025. This increase in connectivity is helping bridge the educational gap between Nigeria and more developed countries.

Friday Erhabor, director of media at Marklenez Limited, highlighted the impact of technology on students’ access to global educational resources. “With smartboards and good internet access, Nigerian students can now tap into global knowledge, something that was previously unattainable,” he noted.

Technology Supports Special Needs Students

Smartboards and digital learning tools are proving especially beneficial for students with special needs. Victor Brown, a special educational needs therapist, pointed out that adaptive technology has made it easier for students with learning challenges to interact with the curriculum. “Digital learning offers flexibility and accessibility, especially in areas where transportation and infrastructure limit access to traditional schools,” Brown explained. Smartboards have allowed students to interact more effectively, with personalized feedback that helps them grasp concepts more clearly.

Challenges in Digitising Education

Despite the benefits of smartboards and digital learning tools, Nigeria still faces significant challenges in fully digitizing its education system. Many teachers lack the digital expertise required to maximize the potential of these tools, and inadequate infrastructure and limited internet connectivity further complicate the transition. Achebo and Brown both stressed the importance of investing in digital infrastructure and providing proper training for teachers to make technology-based learning truly effective.

In conclusion, while Nigeria’s education system is rapidly embracing smartboards and other digital tools, overcoming infrastructural and training challenges will be key to ensuring that students and teachers fully benefit from this tech revolution.
