The Kano State House of Assembly was plunged into mourning on Wednesday following the deaths of two serving legislators within a short period.
Hon. Aminu Sa’adu, who represented Ungoggo Local Government Area, passed away first, followed shortly by the death of Sarki Aliyu Daneji, the lawmaker for Kano Municipal Local Government Area. The close timing of both deaths sent ripples of shock through Kano’s political community.
Sanusi Bature, spokesperson for the Kano State Governor, confirmed Daneji’s passing through a post on his official Facebook page.
Earlier, the assembly had announced the death of Ungogo, who also served as Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation. According to a statement from Kamaluddeen Shawai, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Ungogo died at the assembly complex following a brief illness. He left behind a wife and children.
Speaker Jibril Falgore expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as huge and irreplaceable. He noted that the deaths came at a crucial moment when the state needed the lawmakers’ contributions most.
“This is a tremendous loss for Kano State,” Falgore said, offering condolences to the families, constituents, and assembly members. He called on the bereaved families to find comfort in God.
The late Ungogo was scheduled to be buried at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at his hometown, according to Shawai.
