England manager Sarina Wiegman has said that she is very unhappy with Mary Earps’ decision to retire from international football.
She recently shared that the decision disappointed her greatly because she wasn’t expecting it at all.
Speaking during a press conference, Wiegman expressed her sadness at the shocking decision, confessing that she would always want Earps in her team.
The coach hailed Mary for doing such an amazing job for England over the years, emphasising that her disappointment stems from the fact that the goalkeeper made a massive difference for the country with her stellar performances in goal.
According to Weigman, Earps definitely had an incredible journey with the English national team, and those are moments she intends to cherish forever.
“I’m disappointed, I’m sad.
I want her in my team. She has done such a great job for England. She has made a massive difference, and we have had an incredible journey so far and I really cherish that. That is also where the disappointment comes from.
It’s emotional because you also have relationships and we have had such a massive journey together with lots of highs and some lows too and that’s what makes it really hard,” she said.
The England manager confirmed that while they indeed had conversations before her retirement announcement, she would like their exchange to remain confidential.
She maintained that she converses with all her players from time to time, and she’ll never make the mistake of sharing details of their private conversations with the press.
“Of course, we had conversations and as I’ve said I want to keep conversations confidential.
She knows I want her in the team so of course we talked about that. We have had conversations, we are in conversation all the time. You have asked me a lot about the goalkeepers in the last period.
I am in conversation with players all the time and I do not give any information about these private conversations we have.” she added.
