The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has revealed that Nigeria ranks first among African countries in the number of students studying in the U.S.
Speaking at the 23rd Annual EducationUSA College Fair in Abuja, Ambassador Mills shared that over 17,600 Nigerian students enrolled across more than 970 U.S. institutions last year, with Texas emerging as the top destination for Nigerian scholars.
“It is wonderful to see the flourishing interest from Nigerians considering studying in the U.S.,” Mills stated. “More Nigerians study in the United States than from any other African country. According to the most recent data, more than 17,600 Nigerian students studied at over 970 institutions across all 50 states and the District of Columbia last year, with Texas being the most popular state.”
The ambassador also highlighted the significance of the EducationUSA College Fair, noting how it provides a platform for prospective students to explore academic opportunities and career paths. Mills further revealed that the annual event has significantly increased the number of Nigerian applicants and enhanced access to financial aid and scholarships.
“Last year alone, over $30 million (47.7 billion naira) in financial aid, scholarships, and assistantships were awarded to students advised by EducationUSA Nigeria. Additionally, 73 students were supported through the Opportunity Funds Programme in Abuja and Lagos,” Mills added.
He emphasized the critical role education plays in promoting economic growth, improving health, and advancing gender equality, stating, “A prosperous and stable Nigeria benefits both Nigeria and the United States, and it all starts with education.”
