The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has highlighted the need for an enabling environment to trigger economic growth across the country.
Treasurer, NECA, Richard Ayibiowu, recently revealed this at NECA House, Alausa, Lagos State, while speaking during the annual MSMEs Fair, a premier event designed to aid micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in scaling and sustaining their businesses.
Richard revealed that MSMEs should be encouraged to consistently display their capacity, fulfil their potential and contribute to economic development.
He advocated for innovative and inclusive approaches to MSME development, appealing to public and private sector investors to always treat support for MSMEs as a long-term investment.
Also having her say, the Managing Director, Fate Foundation, Adenike Adeyemi reiterated the need for a conducive operating environment for MSMEs across Nigeria, insisting that without their active contribution, Nigeria cannot develop properly.
“To truly unlock the potential of MSMEs as a cornerstone for economic growth and national stability, we must foster an environment where stakeholders are empowered and encouraged to demonstrate their capabilities and contributions
This starts with a strong policy framework, one that guarantees access to infrastructure, professional financial guidance, and sustained government support,” she said.
Adenike believes capacity building is absolutely crucial for MSMEs that want to scale their business and trigger inclusive growth.
“We need to embrace diverse and innovative schemes that genuinely support MSMEs, regardless of immediate outcomes. All stakeholders, whether in the public or private sector must shift their mindset to see MSME development as a long-term investment agenda, not merely a commercial opportunity,” she added.
Also speaking at the gathering, Country Director, International Labour Organisation(ILO), Ms. Vanessa Phala-Moyo, disclosed that MSMEs owners must make sure that their businesses do not violate human rights in any way, especially underage labour.
Adenike stated that human rights must always be respected at all times because it is not just a moral obligation, but a business necessity to help MSMEs attain realistic economic development.
