Nigeria’s teenage tennis prospect, Oluwaseun “The Shark” Ogunsakin, has secured a place in the main draw of the 2026 US Open Junior Championships after an impressive victory in the final round of qualifying.
The 14-year-old defeated Canada’s top seed, Felix Roussel, 6-3, 6-4 to earn his first-ever appearance in the US Open Junior main draw.
Ogunsakin, who represents Aurum Tennis Academy, had earlier produced another dominant performance, beating Poland’s Tymon Litwic 6-3, 6-0 in the previous qualifying round.
The achievement adds to what has been a remarkable year for the young Nigerian, who is competing in his third consecutive Grand Slam junior tournament.
His Grand Slam journey began at the Roland Garros Junior Championships before he moved on to the Wimbledon Juniors.
At Wimbledon, Ogunsakin made history by becoming the first Nigerian since 1990 to compete in the boys’ singles event and the country’s first singles representative at a Grand Slam tournament in more than a decade.
He went on to reach the main draw of the boys’ singles and the semi-finals of the doubles competition at Wimbledon Juniors.
His progress at the tournament followed convincing wins in qualifying, including a 6-3, 6-4 victory over British wildcard Archie Gray and another strong performance against Canada’s highly ranked junior, Benjamin Azar.
The US Open Junior Championships feature 64 players in each of the boys’ and girls’ singles competitions, while the doubles events have 32 teams each.
The singles qualifying competition features 32 players competing for six places in each junior main draw.
The 2026 US Open Junior Championships main draw is scheduled to take place from September 6 to September 12.
Ogunsakin’s continued development has been boosted by his participation in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) High Performance Centre in Tunisia and the ITF/Grand Slam Player Development Programme.
Over the past three years, those programmes have given the youngster regular exposure to some of the best junior players in the world and helped prepare him for major international competitions.
His qualification for the US Open Junior main draw further underlines his rapid rise and offers Nigeria another promising name to watch in international tennis.
