2027 Race Goes Global as APC, ADC Battle for Influence in Washington

Nigeria’s political contest ahead of the 2027 presidential election has expanded beyond its borders, with key players now taking their campaigns to global capitals such as Washington and London.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), led by President Bola Tinubu, and a reinvigorated opposition anchored by Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), are intensifying efforts to shape international opinion about Nigeria’s political landscape.

Both camps are targeting foreign policymakers, international media, and the Nigerian diaspora, recognising that global perception could influence investment, diplomatic relations, and how the credibility of the 2027 election is judged.

Opposition takes its case abroad

The opposition says its international outreach is a necessary step to draw attention to what it describes as threats to Nigeria’s democracy.

Paul Ibe, media adviser to Atiku, argued that the issue goes beyond party politics. According to him, the ADC represents a critical safeguard for democratic values, urging the international community to pay close attention to developments in Nigeria.

To strengthen its messaging, the ADC has established a global representatives network aimed at directly engaging foreign governments and institutions.

Phrank Shaibu, Atiku’s aide on public communication, also criticised the government’s international engagement, describing it as an attempt to mask domestic challenges. He maintained that worsening economic hardship and governance issues cannot be hidden by foreign lobbying efforts.

APC defends global engagement

The APC, however, insists its international push is legitimate and necessary. Party officials say engaging lobbying and public affairs firms abroad is standard global practice used by governments to promote national interests, attract investment, and counter misinformation.

Seye Oladejo, spokesperson for the APC in Lagos, stated that the government’s efforts are aimed at presenting a more accurate and forward-looking narrative about Nigeria. He also accused the opposition of previously portraying the country negatively on the global stage.

Billions spent on influence

What distinguishes the current situation is the scale of resources being deployed.

Reports indicate that the federal government has committed up to $9 million to lobbying efforts in the United States, while Atiku has reportedly secured a $1.2 million contract to boost his own influence in Washington.

In addition, the ADC is building a structured international network across cities such as Washington DC, London, and Brussels, signalling a shift from occasional outreach to a more coordinated global strategy.

Strategy or reaction?

Analysts say the growing reliance on international lobbying raises important questions. Dr. Brian Rubin, an international business consultant, suggested that the government’s approach may be more reactive than strategic, noting that prioritising lobbying over strengthening domestic institutions could undermine credibility.

His view highlights a broader concern: as perception becomes central to political competition, the gap between image and reality could widen.

Why it matters

The internationalisation of Nigeria’s political contest carries real consequences. Global perception can influence investor confidence, diplomatic pressure, and the level of scrutiny applied to the 2027 election.

For the government, the goal is to reinforce confidence in its leadership. For the opposition, it is to spotlight concerns about governance and democratic integrity. In both cases, the audience now extends far beyond Nigeria’s borders.

Looking ahead

As political alliances evolve and preparations for 2027 gather pace, it is clear that the contest will be fought both domestically and internationally.

While significant resources are being spent to shape narratives abroad, the final outcome will still depend on Nigerian voters. The key question remains whether the image presented to the world will reflect the realities experienced at home.
