Dame Christine Doja Otedola, the mother of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola and former First Lady of Lagos State, is set to receive one of the Catholic Church’s highest honours from Pope Francis. On September 14, 2024, she will be conferred with the prestigious Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal at a special ceremony held at the Holy Cross Cathedral in Lagos. This award is the highest Papal honour given to laypeople for their exemplary service to the Catholic Church and their community.
The Catholic Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Lagos, Most Rev. (Dr.) Alfred Adewale Martins, will officiate the event on behalf of Pope Francis. Dame Doja Otedola will be honoured alongside five other distinguished members of the Archdiocese, including Peter Amangbo, Walter Akpani, Peter Nwanze, and Julius Olufunsho Britto.
At 92 years old, Dame Doja Otedola is a pillar of the Catholic Church and a respected matriarch of the Otedola family. She leads a deeply spiritual and philanthropic life, rooted in her Catholic faith. Her devotion to the Church has been evident throughout the years, including her decision to erect a Grotto in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary when she was 85. Additionally, for her 90th birthday, she personally financed the construction of an ultra-modern auditorium for St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Odoragunshin, Epe, Lagos State.
A lifelong educator, Dame Otedola was baptized into the Catholic faith in July 1958 at St. Dominic’s Priory on Southampton Road, London. Since then, she has dedicated her life to the values of charity, education, and community service, which align with the ideals of the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal.
The Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice honour, also known as the “Cross of Honor,” was instituted by Pope Leo XIII in 1888 and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding valour, bravery, and dedication to the Church. The honour encourages the highest standards and values within the Catholic Church by rewarding individuals who exemplify these qualities. It is granted by the Holy Father, with nominations promoted by the local church.
Dame Doja Otedola’s upcoming recognition solidifies her legacy as a devout Catholic, a loving matriarch, and a community builder whose contributions have deeply impacted both the Church and society at large. Her family, including her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, are expected to attend this monumental occasion to celebrate her well-deserved honour.
This significant recognition places her alongside an elite group of individuals who have received Papal honours, highlighting her lifelong commitment to faith, service, and the betterment of her community.
