The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed media reports suggesting that its ongoing investigation into Aisha Achimugu is linked to political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the anti-graft agency clarified that Achimugu is being probed solely for alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering, stressing that the case has no connection to any political actors or dealings.
The EFCC revealed that its investigation into Achimugu began in 2022, but she had previously obtained a court injunction restraining the Commission from arresting or investigating her. However, on February 19, 2025, a Federal High Court in Abuja vacated the injunction, affirming the EFCC’s authority to proceed with its probe.
The Justice (not named) ruled that “no court has the power to stop the investigative powers of the Police, EFCC, or any agency established under our laws to investigate crimes when there is reasonable suspicion of an offence.”
The court also upheld an interim forfeiture order on Achimugu’s assets suspected to be proceeds of crime, dismissing her suit as lacking merit.
The EFCC emphasized its non-partisan stance, urging the public to disregard any insinuations of political motives behind the investigation.
“The case against Achimugu has no immediate or remote nexus with any politician,” the statement read. “We remain committed to professionalism and urge the public to support our efforts without imputing extraneous motives.”
Achimugu has since been declared wanted by the EFCC, with investigations ongoing.
