Hajiya Maryam Abacha, the wife of former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has debunked reports saying her late husband was involved in the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
She recently refuted the reports, stating that her husband had no role in the decision that voided the polls.
Speaking during an interview on TVC, Maryam accused other key players in that government, stating that General Abacha’s name has been unfairly dragged into the controversy.
According to her, people keep crediting Sani Abacha with more power than he actually had back then, and she is shocked that Nigerians have kept falling for the false rumours the people in government have continued to spread.
“People credit my husband with more power than he had at the time. They easily believe lies pushed by those in government,” she said.
Expressing her disappointment in Nigerians for easily believing the unverified claims, she emphasised that the misinformation has led to the circulation of terrible lies, especially the one that portrays Abacha as a looter.
Responding to decades-long accusations of financial theft, Maryam Abacha rubbished claims that her husband looted public funds and described the allegations as untrue and lacking credible evidence.
“Who witnessed these so-called hidden funds? Where are the signatures or documents? The money my husband left for Nigeria vanished within months. Nobody is talking about that,” Maryam said.
She further suggested that the repeated accusations clearly stem from deeper divisions across Nigeria, including ethnic and religious bias.
Maryam concluded by saying that treating people badly because they are from the North or practise Islam is not the right way to think.
“Why do we treat each other so harshly? Is it because someone is a northerner or a southerner, a Muslim or a Christian? That kind of thinking is unjust,” she added.
