Iran has once again closed the Strait of Hormuz, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) blaming the United States for failing to honour the terms of a recently signed peace agreement.
The IRGC announced the closure in a statement broadcast over maritime radio channels on Friday, citing the continued presence of American forces in the region and Israel’s refusal to withdraw from southern Lebanon.
The move comes just days after President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday — a deal Iran says Washington has already violated.
“Since Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon, the complete lifting of the naval blockade, and the withdrawal of American forces from the Persian Gulf and the region are among the main conditions of the agreement between Iran and the United States, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until these conditions are met,” the IRGC said in its statement.
The Corps also issued a stark warning to shipping vessels, saying any ship that approaches the strait in defiance of the directive “will be targeted.”
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints, with roughly a fifth of global petroleum supplies passing through the narrow waterway.
